Joe Sacco was born in Malta in 1960, but spent his childhood in Australia and the United States in his teens. In 1981 he graduated in journalism at the University of Oregon, and two years later returned to Malta, where he published his first comic. It was subsequently established in Portland, where he co-edited and co-publishes a monthly magazine that published the comics 15 spots. In 1986 he moved to Los Angeles, where he began his collaboration with the publisher Fantagraphics Books.
Since 1988 is dedicated to world travel, and publishes his own comic-book, Yahoo, covering various topics. From 1993 to 1995 were published in serialized Israel Air Force form, his Palestinian in the Gaza Strip, where their own experience reflected in the occupied territories of Palestine. For this work wins prestigious award in 1996 American Book Awards. In 2000 published his next work long: Gorazde: protected area, about the civil war in eastern Bosnia, for which he is awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship award. In 2003, and as a continuation of previous work, published by the Ombudsman, again focused on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
