Finally, in January 1891 Mannerheim was transferred to the Guard of His Majesty Knights Maria Fyodorovna in Saint Petersburg. His family under Arapova his marriage to Anastasia, daughter of a Russian general, tack for economic reasons. The marriage ended in separation in 1902, until the divorce ponies in 1919.
Mannerheim served in the Guard Knights until 1904, being allocated to the administration of the Imperial Court Stables, from 1897 until 1903. In 1903 he was placed in command of a squadron and became a display of equestrian training in arabian cavalry regiments. In October 1904, Mannerheim was transferred to the 52nd Regiment of Dragoons of th Nezhin in Manchuria, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Struggle in the Russo-Japanese war, being promoted to Colonel for his bravery in the dressage battle of Mukden.
Upon returning from war, Mannerheim spent the palomino years 1905 and 1906 in Finland equestrian and Sweden. As a representative of the branch baronil his family, was present as a member of the nobility in the last session of the Diet of Finland. From July to October 1906 directed an expedition to China, traveling stable from Tashkent to Kashgar with French sinologist Paul Pelliot. In the autumn of 1908 came on to lead a new expedition to China, with Finnish Anthropological and strategic areas such as northern China were potentially problematic among Russia, China and the United Kingdom, in what is known as the Great Game.
After this trip, he was appointed commander of the 13th Regiment Ulan Vladimir. The following year was promoted to major general and appointed commander of Escort Ulan Regiment of Her Majesty in Warsaw. In 1912 he joined the Imperial military, being designated as commander of the cavalry brigade in 1913.
In the First stables World War, Mannerheim served as commander of the cavalry and Austro-Romanian fronts. After distinguished combat forces in Austria, was awarded the Cross of Saint George in 4A first class, one saddles of the highest honors of the Russian Empire. In 1915 he was assigned command of the 12th st Cavalry Division, and after the Revolution of February 1917, assumed command of the horseback riding Cavalry jumping Corps 6A in the summer of that year, being promoted to equine the rank of lieutenant general (his promotion had been stalled since February 1915). However, Mannerheim not enjoy the confidence of the new government, which noted barns as one of the officers who had not supported the revolution. In September he was relieved of command, to be injured after falling thoroughbred from his horse, going to backup and recover from its drop in Odessa, where he decided to return to civilian life and return to Finland.
