Vodafone Does Not Want to Pay 2 Billion in Taxes
Tue, 07/15/2008 - 08:00
Vodafone, one of the largest telephone companies in the world, has appealed a payment of taxes of $ 2 billion awarded by its purchase of the controlling shareholder of the company Hutchison Essar.
On this issue, the government of India said that the British company must pay income tax on the 11.1 billion dollars from the agreement because the assets of Hutchison Essar are in the country.
On the other side of Vodafone, their lawyers say the agreement was made between two foreign companies by bringing the tax, que se basa en local assets, should not apply.
In addition, Vodafone maintains that local authorities have no jurisdiction over this agreement because it was carried out between the Vodafone Group, registered in the Netherlands, and Hutchison Essar, registered in the Cayman Islands.
